Nectar Points Checklist: Monthly Routines to Maximise Every Shop

Nectar Points Checklist: Monthly Routines to Maximise Every Shop Points

Nectar points are easy to collect. A scan here, a linked purchase there. But without a routine, points can sit forgotten, offers expire unactivated, and you miss the partner bonuses that make the biggest difference. A simple monthly check-in keeps everything moving. It takes ten minutes and can turn a few stray points into a meaningful reward.

Start the Month with a Balance and Expiry Check

Open the Nectar app or website. Look at your points balance, recent activity, and any points due to expire. Nectar points expire after a period of inactivity, so a quick check stops you losing them. If you see points close to expiry, redeem a small amount or earn a point by shopping at a partner. That resets the clock. Set a recurring reminder on the first of the month.

Don't just glance at the number. Check the breakdown. Which shops gave you points last month? Which offers did you actually use? This tells you where your points come from. If one partner is doing all the work, focus your effort there. If another is silent, you might be missing an easy bonus.

Activate Every Relevant Offer Before You Shop

Nectar offers are personalised and must be activated in the app before you shop. If you forget, you earn standard points only. At the start of each month, open the Offers tab and activate everything you might use. You don't have to use them all—but activating takes seconds.

For example, if you see "200 bonus points when you spend £20 on fresh fruit and veg", activate it. Then plan a shop that includes those items. Check back mid-month for new offers. Nectar adds fresh offers regularly, so a single visit at the start of the month isn't enough. A quick look every week or two keeps you ahead.

Use Partner Bonuses Deliberately

Nectar partners include Sainsbury's, Argos, eBay, Esso, Vue, and others. Each has its own earning rate and occasional boosts. A monthly habit: review the partner offers section. If you need fuel, check if Esso has a points boost. If you're buying online, start at the Nectar app or website and click through to eBay or Argos. That way you collect points on purchases you were making anyway.

Don't change your spending just to earn points. Instead, route your existing spending through Nectar partners where it makes sense. For instance, if you're buying a new kettle, check whether Argos or eBay has a bonus. If you're going to the cinema, book through Vue and collect points. Small decisions, repeated monthly, add up.

Build a Simple Monthly Points Routine

A sample monthly checklist

Here's a checklist you can adapt:

  1. First week: Check balance and expiry dates. Activate all relevant offers.
  2. Second week: Review partner offers. Plan any larger purchases—fuel, gifts, household items—around bonus events.
  3. Third week: Check for new offers or points boosts. Use your Nectar card or app at every partner shop.
  4. Fourth week: Review points earned. Note any missed offers. Adjust next month's plan.

This routine takes minutes. The key is consistency, not perfection. If you miss a week, pick it up the next.

Redeem Smartly

Points are only useful when you spend them. Nectar points can be redeemed at Sainsbury's, Argos, eBay, and other partners. The standard value is fixed, but occasional events let you get more. Before redeeming, check the app for any redemption offers. For example, you might be able to use points for a bigger discount at Argos during a promotion.

Use points for things you need: a weekly shop, a fuel fill-up, or a household item. Avoid spending points on impulse buys just because they're "free". If you have a large balance, set a goal: use points to cover a Christmas shop or a birthday gift. That way, redemption feels like a plan, not a splurge.

Keep an Eye on Seasonal Events and Boosts

Nectar runs seasonal events and limited-time boosts. These can be worth more than your usual offers. For instance, a double points weekend at Sainsbury's or a bonus on fuel at Esso. Monthly routine: check the "Featured" or "Boost" section in the app. If you know a big event is coming, like a bank holiday or back-to-school, plan your shopping around it. But only if you were going to buy those items anyway. Don't stock up on things you won't use.

Review and Adjust

At the end of the month, spend five minutes reviewing. How many points did you earn? Which offers gave the best return? Did you miss any because you forgot to activate them? Adjust your routine. Maybe you need a reminder on your phone. Maybe you should link your Nectar card to your online accounts. Small tweaks add up over a year.

Consider keeping a simple note on your phone or a spreadsheet. Track your points balance at the start and end of each month. If it's not growing as much as you'd like, look at why. Are you shopping at partners? Are you activating offers? The answer is usually in the routine.
