Nectar points rarely arrive in dramatic bursts. They build up in the gaps: the weekly shop, the fill-up on the way home, the birthday gift bought online. The shoppers who collect quickly are not doing anything complicated. They have a routine. They scan when they remember, check offers before they spend, and keep an eye on points that go missing. The twelve habits below are designed to fit around ordinary life. None require you to buy things you do not need. Used together, they can turn a slow trickle of points into something more useful.
1. Make your card impossible to forget
Your first habit is simple: remove friction. If finding your Nectar card takes longer than paying, you will skip it. Add the digital card to your phone wallet and keep the physical card in the same place every time. Some people keep one in the car for fuel stops and one in a purse or wallet. That is fine, as long as you scan the same account.
Habit two is to scan on every eligible purchase, not just the big shop. A packet of batteries, a birthday card, a coffee on the go — small transactions still add points at participating partners. It takes seconds, and those seconds add up.
- Save the digital Nectar card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.
- Keep a spare card in the car if you often fill up.
- Scan before you pay, even when the total is small.
2. Check the app before you leave the house
Habit three is a weekly app check. Open the Nectar app and look at your personalised offers. Activate the ones you will genuinely use. Offers often have a deadline, so activating early gives you a better chance of matching them to your normal shopping list.
Habit four is to build your list around those offers — carefully. If you already need pasta, and there is a points boost on pasta, buy the pasta. If the offer is for a luxury item you would not normally buy, leave it. Points are only a reward if the spending was going to happen anyway.
A two-minute routine
- Open the app on a Sunday or the day before your shop.
- Activate every offer you might use.
- Add one or two matching items to your list.
- Ignore the rest until next week.
3. Turn your regular shop into a points run
Habit five: consolidate. If you shop several times a week for convenience, consider whether one larger shop would suit you better. Points are usually awarded per pound spent, so the total matters more than the number of trips. But some offers require a minimum spend or a specific product, and one bigger basket can help you meet those thresholds without extra effort.
Habit six: use your online grocery account properly. Link your Nectar card to the account, check that it is still connected before checkout, and look for points offers on the delivery slot or product pages. If you shop in store, scan your card at the till or self-checkout and check the receipt before you leave. Missing points are easier to sort out when the transaction is fresh.
4. Plan fuel stops so they earn as well as fill
Habit seven: choose a participating fuel station when it is convenient. You do not need to drive across town for points; the extra fuel would cost more than the points are worth. But if two stations are on your route, pick the one where you can scan your Nectar card. At some stations you can scan at the pump; at others you need to go into the kiosk. Either way, make it part of the payment.
Habit eight: check for fuel offers before you fill up. The app may show a points boost on fuel, a car wash, or a snack. If you were going to buy a drink anyway, buy it in the same transaction and scan once. If you were not, skip it. A points offer is not a reason to buy a second coffee.
5. Start online purchases from the right place
Habit nine: when you buy online, begin at the Nectar app or website and click through to the partner. This matters because the points are often tracked by that click. If you open a new tab, use a different device, or clear cookies midway, the tracking can fail. Keep it simple: start in the Nectar app, move to the retailer, and complete the purchase in one go.
Habit ten: check the points are pending, then confirmed. Online points can take time to appear. Keep your order confirmation email until they do. If they have not arrived after the stated period, use the missing points process in your Nectar account. You will need the date, retailer and order number, so a little admin now saves frustration later.
6. Stack sensibly and review once a month
Habit eleven: look at whether you can stack points with a payment method. Some bank cards and credit cards let you collect Nectar points alongside the retailer points. If you hold one, use it only for spending you would make anyway. A credit card is not a points machine if you carry a balance; interest can easily outweigh the reward. If you are considering a new credit card, compare the costs and seek independent financial advice if you are unsure.
Habit twelve: do a monthly points review. It takes five minutes. Check your balance, look for any missing points, and make sure your account is active. Nectar points can expire after a long period of inactivity, so a quick scan or redemption keeps the account ticking over. Set a reminder on your phone for the first of the month.
Your five-minute monthly checklist
- Log in to your Nectar account.
- Check recent transactions for missing points.
- Submit any claims with receipts or order numbers.
- Activate next month’s offers.
- Decide whether to save or spend your balance.
Make the routine fit your life
The best points habit is the one you will repeat. If you never remember to check offers on a Sunday, try Friday. If you always forget the card in the car, add it to your phone today. If you shop online more than in store, focus on clicking through from the app and checking pending points. Pick two or three habits from this list, run them for a month, then add another. You do not need to chase every offer or drive out of your way.
